Itinerary
Day 1 - The Ascent to the Cold Desert
Arrival in Kaza: Arrive in the sub-divisional headquarters of Spiti (usually via Manali or Shimla). Spend your first day resting to acclimatize to the high altitude of 3,800m.
Kaza Market: Take a slow evening walk through the town’s main market, exploring small shops selling local woolens and cafes offering authentic Tibetan butter tea.
Riverbank Relaxation: Enjoy the sunset by the Spiti River, where the vast, barren mountain shadows create a dramatic and peaceful atmosphere.
Day 2 - Spiritual Grandeur at Key and Kibber
Key Monastery: Visit the iconic “Fortress Monastery,” the largest in the valley, featuring a labyrinth of prayer halls and narrow corridors filled with ancient murals.
Kibber Village: Explore one of the highest inhabited villages in the world, known for its unique stone and mud architecture and as a base for snow leopard sightings in winter.
Chicham Bridge: Walk across Asia’s highest suspension bridge, spanning a deep gorge that offers a thrilling view and an incredible photography spot.
Day 3 - The High Circuit: Hikkim, Komic, and Langza
World’s Highest Post Office: Visit Hikkim and send a handwritten postcard to your loved ones from the highest functional post office on Earth.
Komic Village: Journey to the highest motorable village in the world and visit the Tangyud Monastery, which stands as a silent sentinel over the rugged landscape.
Fossil Hunting in Langza: Admire the giant golden Buddha statue overlooking the valley and walk through the fields to find ancient marine fossils (Ammonites) embedded in the soil.
Day 4 - The Ancient Soul of Tabo and Giu
Tabo Monastery: Step into the “Ajanta of the Himalayas,” a UNESCO World Heritage site over 1,000 years old, famous for its preserved clay statues and intricate wall paintings.
Giu Mummy: Take a detour to see the 500-year-old naturally preserved mummy of a Buddhist monk, which was discovered during a road excavation.
Tabo Caves: Hike up to the meditation caves above the monastery, where monks still retreat for silence and reflection.
Day 5 - Cliffside Wonders and Pin Valley
Dhankar Monastery: Marvel at this 12th-century monastery spectacularly perched on a cliff edge, overlooking the confluence of the Spiti and Pin Rivers.
Dhankar Lake Trek: Embark on a moderate 45-minute uphill trek to the turquoise waters of the high-altitude lake, surrounded by jagged peaks.
Mudh Village: Enter the lush (by Spitian standards) Pin Valley and stay at Mudh, a picturesque village that serves as the gateway to the Pin Valley National Park.
Day 6 - The Celestial Shores of Chandratal
Kunzum Pass: Cross the high mountain pass (4,550m), stopping at the temple of Goddess Kunzum where every vehicle circles for a safe journey.
Lake of the Moon: Reach the crescent-shaped Chandratal Lake, where the water changes color from deep blue to emerald green as the sun moves across the sky.
Stargazing Camp: Spend the night in a luxury tent near the lake (at a safe distance to protect the environment) and witness a sky filled with a million stars and the Milky Way.
Day 7 - Transition through the Atal Tunnel
Morning by the Lake: Catch the first light hitting the surrounding glaciers before beginning your return journey toward the greener pastures of Lahaul.
Atal Tunnel Drive: Experience the engineering marvel of the 9km tunnel, which dramatically cuts travel time and connects the high-altitude desert to the lush Kullu Valley.
Departure: Transfer to Manali for your onward journey, carrying the silence and the spiritual strength of the Spiti mountains with you.
